Yeah !!!, it's SMS Giveaway Day !!!

How exciting! It's finally here! This year's SMS Giveaway Day.

I am so thrilled to participate this year. First I had all these great, awesome plans to handmake something for this giveaway, but then quickly and totally ran out of time. So, instead, I have decided to pick a set of fat quarters of one of my current favorite fabric lines. I hope you like...

But, first, here is a picture of the handmade gifts for the kids' teachers:

Handmade soaps (Yes, I made them myself! Super easy and fun.) and a lavender filled ornament.
If you are ever looking to purchase fresh dried lavender you HAVE to go with posi_trade on Ebay. They have the most reasonable prices I could find anywhere and their Grosso lavender smells just awesome. Right now I am storing it in my sewing room in a tightly closed ziplock bag. But still, the room smells like a lavender field.

Okay, back to the issue at hand.
Problem is, that these gifts are, let's be honest, geared towards female teachers. But, it just so happens, that there are also two male teachers: Yanic's Gym teacher and one of the Pre-school teachers at the girl's school. And, I have no idea of what to make for them!
This is were you come in. For your chance to win, please leave a comment and give me your ideas for a handmade gift suited for a male teacher.
Giveaway will be open until Sunday, December 6th (Nikolaus Day). And I think I will pick the comment with the best idea. If there are several comments that I really like I will draw a random number instead.

Oh, I guess, you would also like to know what you can win ;-)
Four fat quarters of Michelle Engel Bencsko's Shade Garden fabrics.

Good Luck!

I find it so much easier to handmake for women!

I like giving food gifts to men . . .gift cards . . tea or coffee, I struggle every year with wanting to make my husband something and then I end up buying!!

I'll be curious with what you come up with!

Hmm... I think some handmade soap off Etsy. They make some great beer soap. Very fun! Otherwise, make a manly version of Pink Penguin's Fabric Basket Tutorial (think denim and a boyish fabric) and tuck in some fun food treats.

Thank you for the giveaway - this is a great line of fabric!

For male teachers we always used to make them a "from the desk of" note pad. As a teacher they probably use a lot of notes and who doesn't like personalized stationary!! :)

ooohh thanks for the lavendar tip..I was thinking of doing some rice heating bags for presents and wanted to add something calming and smell goody!! How about that for a gym teacher...or even your pit boo boos...I gave a couple I got from you to my daughter's Pre-K teacher and she said the kids LOVE them...He could use them for his students bumps and bruises?? Also, I am going to do a couple of the coffee/can koozies...I saw one through SMS where you add a plastic pocket so they could insert a picture...very cool!! Great giveaway girl...have LOADS of fun this week!! xo

Why not soap? Most men bathe. And just look at the men's fragrance market. Those guys like to smell good!

male teacher gift, hmm. a cover for a travel pack of tissues made from suiting, a cozie for a coffee mug/can of pop, or stationery. Or candy.

Food has always been a hit for the men. I like Rachel Ray's 5 minute fudge and maybe some cream cheese mints.
Thanks for the giveaway! I love the colors!

Hi - I would have to go with food, a scarf, perhaps a laptop sleeve.

Tara said...

Easy peasy! You just take your homemade soaps, put them in a mug--preferably not glass or ceramic--metal works best and buy a shaving brush. My husband syas he'll never use shaving cream again after this! And my neices gave them to their male teachers last year and they seemed to like them fine! Or a gift certificate to a coffee shop. Men are boring like that! Thanks for the chance to win!

A wallet might be useful. I've seen tutorials for charging stations or decorated Hand sanitizer (always useful in a classroom especially during flu season). I've also seen tutorials for water bottle holders- that might be useful for the gym teacher. Good luck!

My daughter is loom-knitting a hat for her male teacher- I figured he could use it on playground duty days during the winter. (I also got him a gift card to a bookstore, so no handmade help there!)
Good luck! And thanks for the fun giveaway!

Katie said...

I used to teach with a male kindergarten teacher and besides Starbucks gift cards which he loved, even a $5 dollar one was GOLD to him, he once said that this little scrapbook a parent made for him was his favorite gift. It was simple just a 6X6 book with a picture of each child in the class and a short message they dictated to their parent on the otherside. He kept it displayed on his desk, always and would take it out and read it if he had an especially rough day. He told me it reminded him why he was teaching. Wow just realized those kids are like seventh graders now.

Unknown said...

Lovely fabrics. I could have fun with those. And I love that you made soaps for the teachers. Great gift (former teacher here).

For a male teacher. Yes, I agree, food gifts are fun, but he probably gets a ton of those. How about a gift certificate to a restaurant? Starbucks on the way to school on a cold winter morning ... perfect!

I tried teacher school and taught for a total of 3 months. Here is what you can make the male teachers (and the female teachers for that matter):
a small clock. Those ones that you use the clock mechanism and then embroider or paint or whatever the numbers/background.

Include a note saying they can use it either to count the number of wonderful hours they've had with your children today, or the number of hours they have left to go before they can go home and forget they ever took up such a difficult profession.

(As you can guess, I was Always Counting Down the hours. :)

I always run into the same problem - not with teacher,s my daughter is not old enough, but just with men on my list that I want to make something for. I like the idea of hot pack - use manly fabric, fill with beans or rice, include instructions for microwaving... - this would probably be especially good for a gym teacher with sore muscles. (Oh and if you put it in the freezer it can be a cold pack.)

FibreJoy said...

I think any teacher male or female would like a hand written note from the student, thanking them for the things they have taught them and what they are looking forward to in class in the new year. You could always tuck it into a mug with some hot chocolate or apple cider if you need a "gift" but a note saying what the teacher means to the child might be nice.

I think you could make soap for the men to but give it a more woodsy smell. But if you don't want to go with that or any of the normal gifts like food what if you made them a nice scarf or a toolbelt. Okay so a toolbelt might sound cheesy but just because they are teachers doesn't mean they don't have a honey do list at home and my husband is always struggling to find a way to hold onto all that stuff he needs at the top of the ladder.

With a few teachers in the family, I've learned that they are always needing nice looking paper (rather than notebook paper) to send notes home to parents, write memos to other teachers, and so on. I always have a harder time doing handmade gifts for men! I think food gifts always go over well for them though, maybe beer bread (or even a beer bread mix in a bag with a bottle of brew and directions... you can find recipes for the mix on the Whole Foods Website). I also like homemade beef jerkey or spiced nuts for men. Of course quick breads, cookies and candies are great to. Oh, and caramel popcorn or peanut brittle are good also. Chocolate covered pretzels or truffles are nice also.

For my husband this year I'm hand decorating a cheap coffee mug with a meaningful phrase. If you did this you could throw a tea bag and cinnamon stick, or small coffee pouch, chocolate dipped spoon or peppermint stick and a baked good in there also.

For my father in law this year I'm making bookplates, stationary, and return address labels, possibly packaged with a nice pen.

Homemade spice mixes are also good, maybe taco, chili, BBQ etc all mixed up and presented in cute canisters with recipe ideas, or grill tongs.

On that note, even bottled homemade BBQ sauce, salsa, or pickles could be good. Or maybe a jar of homemade jam and peanut butter and a loaf of homemade bread.

shannon.mangerchine(at)gmail(dot)com

In the past I've given homemade journals (a composition book modge-podged with pretty paper) and a homemade bookmark to guys that I thought would enjoy them.

I made my brother two kinds of bark last year and he went crazy for it:
http://kleiosbelly.wordpress.com/2008/12/16/in-case-of-emergency-bake-a-cake/

It's very inexpensive and easy to make but looks great in a tin.

As a teacher myself (college level, so we don't normally get prezzies, booo), I'd also suggest something completely practical, like a gift certificate or notepads & pens. There might be an overload of trinkets and whatnot if a whole class is doing the same. (The soap is great! Thoughtful but practical!)

I would just do a gift card for the local coffee shop. Men are so hard to shop for.

I would go with coffee stuff and a gift card... all my make teachers seem to be into coffee.... think it may be a job hazard!
Thanks for a great giveaway!antly

Teachers come up against a lot of germs at school, so maybe some natural hand disinfectant? Citrus scents wouldn't be too girly, I think.

I think homemade treats would be good.

Hmm...that's a tough one, male teachers! What about a sewn coffee cozy in "masculine" colours? The teachers I know complain that their pens and pencils constantly disappear, so maybe personalised pens or paper-covered pencils with the teacher's name?

How about a journal with a handmade cover? A felt or quilted coffee cup holder? Magnets made with your kids' artwork? Hip pillowcases? Good luck!

A knitted scarf... but it's too late for that, is it? Cookies would be good. Something that you bake... Or napkins... Ashley from Film in the fridge has a great tutorial...

Thanks for the great giveaway! Happy holidays!

To be honest I have the same problem as you! So I would say handmade food! Like cookies in a mug, or something along those lines. You will keep the handmade theme, but it will be food! Unless you can knit a beanie hat... ?

My Grandfather told me the way into any mans good graces is through is stomach and as a school teacher I say bake them something yummy.

Maybe food? Or something that he like...if he's given any anecdotes about anything he does out of class.
Cute stuff!

I am making journal covers for some of the men in my family for Christmas. As a former teacher, I know that I used journals and notebooks constantly. A reusable cover would be nice.

Thanks for the chance to enter!

That's a tough one. But maybe a small basket with some coffee themed items. A mug, various coffees, maybe some cookies.
